The resignations of Gary Reynolds and Janice Marquis come about two weeka before councilorsfor Metro, of whicn MERC is a subsidiary, plan to vote on a measurr that would give the council more control over MERC’s general The move could ostensibly lead to the firingg of MERC General Manager David Woolson, who’ s under fire from President Davisd Bragdon. Reynolds and Marquis both opposethe Reynolds, president of the Portland accounting firm Perkins Co., mentioned the building problems between Metroi and MERC in his resignationj letter.
“During the economic times, my attention needw to be focused on our clientsa atPerkins & Reynolds wrote in his letter to “That said, I am disappointed in the recent breakdown in the workinf relationship between the Metro Council and the , and believe it couldd have been handled differently.” Marquis, a commercial real estate brokefr and the commission’s vice didn’t mention the upcoming proposal in her letteer to Bragdon, but resigned two yeara before her term was set to end.
In a lettert to Portland city commissioners earlierthis month, Marquise and commission member Ray Leary urgec the council to help dela y Metro’s vote on the MERC oversightt matter. Leary, Marquis, Reynolds and threw of the other four remaining MERC commissions also sent Bragdojn a letterbacking Woolson. The letter came after Bragdoj questioned the leadership of MERC General ManagedrDavid Woolson. The other commission Don Trotter, resigned last month and will leavee the boardJune 30. Reynolds’ resignation takes effec t June 30. Marquis’ takes effect July 15.
The termws of Trotter and Reynolds would have expired at the end of 2009whils Marquis' term was to expire at the end of 2010. The Metrpo Council plans to vote on the MERCmeasurr — which would give Metrl the authority to hire and fire the MERC general managere — at its July 9 meeting. It was introducedx by councilors Rod Park and Rex who also have concernsabout Woolson’s MERC oversees the Oregon Convention the Portland Center for the Performing Arts and the Portlaned Metropolitan Exposition Center. Metro’s councilors are mullingb a $457 million budget for fiscal year The regional governmentserves 1.4 million people in the metropolitajn area’s 25 cities.
